Job Summary

This position oversees the field-based team of Medical Science Liaisons.
As leader of this team, this head will set the strategic direction of the team and ensure that it aligns with the strategy of other aspects of Medical Affairs. Further they are responsible for ensuring that the plan is executed in a compliant manner. This position will require travel to provide mentoring to the MSL team members as well as travel to attend Medical Conferences.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Creates Field Medical Team strategic and tactical plans, overseeing execution and ensuring alignment across Medical Affairs.
  • Develops processes for medical insight reporting, territory planning, and congress coverage.
  • Fosters a culture of empowerment, collaboration, and patient impact across regional and national field medical teams.
  • Ensures the team is equipped to provide scientifically sound educational presentations to healthcare providers.
  • Mentors, coaches, and identifies professional development opportunities for each MSL direct report.
  • Oversees execution of stakeholder engagement strategy with healthcare providers, academic institutions, and community centers.
  • Identifies opportunities for compliant and effective cross-functional collaboration with Clinical Development, Medical Affairs, and Commercial teams.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Development and Clinical Operations to develop site identification and clinical trial support plans.
  • Ensures MSL team members maintain appropriate communication with the field sales organization per compliance guidelines.
  • Partners with leadership on business strategy, tactical plan development, and implementation.
  • Provides MSLs with the necessary tools, training, and materials for scientifically accurate and fair-balanced work.
  • Identifies and supports projects that enhance organizational impact and advance Medical Affairs objectives.
  • Ensures MSLs maintain up-to-date databases, document HCP interactions, and comply with regulatory and compliance guidelines. Manages activities within the assigned budget.
  • Builds and maintains peer-to-peer relationships with key external experts through in-person and virtual interactions.
  • Along with the Sr. Director of Medical Affairs, serves on the Medical Affairs Leadership Team.

Qualifications

  • Advanced, medical/scientific doctoral level degree required: MD, PharmD, PhD.
  • Demonstrated ability to create departmental capabilities, processes, and procedures to ensure alignment with desired outcomes.
  • 20+ years of experience in the Pharmaceutical or Biotech Industry, including experience within Medical Affairs.
  • 15+ years of experience in a leadership role managing Field Medical teams.
  • Demonstrated experience recruiting, hiring, and retaining Field Medical talent.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills (proactive, strategic, creates a highly accountable team culture, provides clear direction), project management and organizational skills, with the ability to evaluate competing priorities to arrive at an appropriate decision.
  • Collaborative, team-based approach; ability to network and partner with internal and external stakeholders, including medical thought leaders and a wide range of healthcare professionals.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable regulatory requirements for field-based personnel and PhRMA guidelines, including geographic regulatory-related guidelines.
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal skills required.
  • Experience with launching a new product is a plus.

Education and/or Experience

  • Advanced degree in life sciences (PharmD, PhD, MD/DO, or equivalent) is required.
  • Minimum of 10/20 years of experience in Medical Affairs, 5/15+ years of experience in field medical affairs.
  • Prior experience in managing and leading a team of Medical Science Liaisons (MSLs).
